McGuffey's Eclectic Second Reader

This second book marks several differences from the previous volumes. The size of the type decreases considerably so that more text can be printed on each page. The number of illustrations also decreases and more images are left to the imagination of the reader. To promote comprehension, each reading section is followed by a set of questions about what the student has just read.

This volume contains the first mention of death with a poem that discusses the death of a younger brother. They also introduce the notion of heroes as inspirational figures with short sections on George Washington and Christopher Columbus.

Moral instruction continues as before. One reading section offers further instruction in the folly of abuse of alcoholic beverages.

The original of this book was also copyrighted in 1836.
