Chess
Chess is an ancient game that involves strategy and skill
without any element of luck. It has been a part of American life for centuries if we are to judge by it being included in Hoyle's rules for
games from the mid 1700's.
This board folds in the middle so the board and playing pieces can be transported together. It is similar to one on display at the NPS vistors' center in
Gettysburg. The primary difference between the board we offer and the board on display is the way it folds. The period board folds toward the board so
that the board is on the inside when closed. With our board, the board remains on the outside when it is closed. But this is the closest we have found to
the board on display.
When folded, the board is 8 inches by 4 inches by 1 1/2 inches.
And in case you are wondering, the smudges on the dark squares
are bits of beeswax I use to hold the pieces in place when I display the board in my sutler's tent. It saves having to look for pieces in the grass as frequently.
The cost of this chess set is $24.20
