Price Comparisons, Price Increases, and
Salaries of Jobs During the Civil War
The inflation of prices in the South during
the civil war is a widely known occurrence. However, what is not as
widely known is a quantification of the inflation.
This booklet cites the date, price, and item for various purchases
made throughout the Confederacy. The purchases are listed in
chronological order so the price escalation can be seen for some of the
more common items.
Because the information is anecdotal and prices varied considerably
depending upon the time of year and the location and circumstances of
the purchaser, a single price cannot be assumed to have applied
throughout all the Confederate states. However, the prices cited show
the very significant upward trend as the war continued.
Most impressive are the graphs at the very back of the book that
display the increases in selected items from the beginning of the war
to the end. And those prices assume that the item was available.
Regrettably for the families at home, the soldier's monthly pay did not
keep pace with the inflation of prices.
Price: $3.50
