McGuffey's Eclectic Progressive Spelling Book

The speller proceeds in an interesting fashion. Instead of starting with words, the first lessons are involved with spelling syllables instead of whole words. The first lesson examines syllables of only two letters. The next uses words and syllables of three letters, and the next words or syllables of four letters. The complexity of the words increases steadily through the book until some words difficult for people to spell today conclude the spelling lessons. The book concludes with some abbreviations and proper names.

The original of this book was also copyrighted in 1838.
