Historic Uses of Herbs

Herbs have been recognized for centuries as being useful for other than culinary purposes, the most well known being for medicines and health purposes. Sometimes the uses ascribed to an herb were mistaken, but others we have now found were very effective. The discussion in this booklet looks at the uses herbs were believed to have during the nineteenth century, regardless of their real utility. These supposed uses became more important in the South after the Union blockade cut off supplies of many medicines. However, the herbal uses may or may not have been correct.

Anyone wishing to assess the efficacy of any of the herbs can consult some of the abundant modern books on herbs. While misinformation also abounds today, reputable books exist and can provide the most current knowledge about the herbs. The books listed in the bibliography can be used as a starting point in any further reading.

Because some of the herbs, like medicines today, if misused can cause sickness or even death, no recipes are included. Further, we would tell anyone wishing to experiment with the herbs described as having certain effects not to do so.
