Flitting Fingers

Unlike some of the booklets by Michael or Virginia shown previously on this list, this publication is a quite more extensive review. Counting the bibliography, it is 110 pages in length. While other books about tatting will discuss the craft during the nineteenth century, this is the only book that focuses entirely upon that time period. Yet, between 1840 and 1900 were probably the most significant as far as the development of tatting techniques is concerned.

Topics addressed in the book include a discussion of the history of tatting, some of the prominent innovators in tatting, tools and materials, needle tatting and its history, nineteenth century techniques, patterns from nineteenth century sources, tips for tatting as part of historic interpretation, sources of supplies, and samples of patents.

For those unfamiliar with this art form, the tatter constructs a series of knots and loops to make a form of lace that is very delicate in appearance but very durable. If the number of patterns in ladies' magazines during the mid to late nineteenth century, it must have been much more popular at that time than it is now.

There are many cases where a bit of tatted trim outlasted the garment that it was sewn to, so, when the garment was discarded, the tatting was cut off and recycled on another garment. We can even relate a personal experience that follows that pattern. We used tatting to trim some bath towels. Those towels are now starting to get holes but the tatting is still holding up fine.
