Spencerian Copy Books

Only book 2 is illustrated but each of the others in identical in outside appearance, differing only in the number in the upper corners.

Each of these books contains 24 pages and consists of samples of letters at the top of each page with blank lines below to practice. All but Book 5 also have a vertical guide of some sort to assist in getting the angle of the letter and the horizontal spacing correct. While not very exciting to do, the practice of this manual skill was important to do if the penmanship was to well-formed.

The second picture shows the interior of Book 2 to show the format of a representative portion of a page with the sample at the top and blank lines following.

The contents of the books are as follows:

Book 1 - Individual strokes used in forming some of the lower case letters and selected short lower case letters singly and in short combinations.

Book 2 - Additional strokes used in forming some of the lower case letters, additional short lower case letters, and the tall lower case letters of "t" and "d". The repetitions and combinations are also longer than in Book 1

Book 3 - This book completes the lower case alphabet and introduces all of the upper case letters. Letters are formed into words.

Book 4 - The student learns to combine letters into longer words combined of both upper and lower case letters.

Book 5 - In this final book, short phrases or sentences are introduced. To make the statements an excercise of the entire alphabet, there is at least one phrase or sentence beginning with each letter of the alphabet.

The last picture is an original copybook published in 1864.
