This hefty volume, originally printed in 1864, is a very comprehensive collection of boys activities. It draws heavily on other similar books also available at the time but none of the others has such extensive coverage. Among the topics addressed are such items as games with outdoor games and plays with toys, games without toys, indoor games, pets, birds, fishing, magic, puzzles, and individual sections for certain sports including cricket, baseball, and croquet.

For children's activities in general and for boys especially, this book is probably a "bible" for activities. While we cannot recommend all the activities (e.g., one is said "to produce torn jackets"), and some should be supervised by an adult, if someone is trying to reproduce nineteenth entertainment for children for a reenactment or merely for their own enjoyment, this book would make a valuable contribution. And as we mentioned above, we have only been able to find a few copies of this book. When they are gone, we will be deleting this item from our catalogue.
